BOTTLENECK SLIDE GUITAR is based on an early one string folk instrument called the Diddley-Bow, and the traditional playing style of Hawaiian Guitar. The early Blues Masters of the 1920s and 30s, would place a bottleneck from a wine bottle, or a short piece of metal pipe on their finger. Using this as a slide, they could move up and down along the strings of a guitar imitating singing or the cries and moans of the human voice. This style uses an early method of tuning the guitar called open tuning, that is also used to play banjo. The guitar is tuned to a D or E chord, that actually makes it easier to learn music theory. The course starts with learning to play single note melody lines on one string. Next, by adding a second note harmony is created. Then a third note creates chords. The final song is embellished by adding strumming techniques and bottleneck slide.
THIS CD WILL NOT ONLY TEACH YOU HOW TO PLAY BOTTLENECK GUITAR, BUT HOW TO CREATE AND ARRANGE SONGS.
The Blues songs presented on this cd are in the style of Robert Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Tommy Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Howlin’ Wolf, and Muddy Waters .Traditional Country Gospel songs are also taught because they were a major influence in the development of the Blues.
Plays on your PC. Video in .WMA format. Use Windows media player, Winamp (free download online), etc. Plays on Mac, as long as you support Windows Media files. Almost 2 hours long.

Thank you. My CDs …
Thank you. My CDs contain written tablature in a file. If you are interested in learning this style, I think you will realize, armed with the information presented on the CDs, you will have no problem figuring out the song yourself. In the future, I might get around to doing a lesson on a six string for Baby, Please Don’t Go, but like I stated , the 3 string version is directly applicable to a 6 string. Please check it out. I think you will be pleased. Enjoy.

Even though I’m in another key and only have 3 strings, the interval relationship for Open D (DADf#ad) is the same. If you are interested in this style, please consider purchasing my instructional video CDs. They are very reasonably priced and will help you figure out and arrange songs yourself.

Thank you for supporting my efforts by purchasing my CD. I greatly appreciate it. I would suggest googling Stefan Grossman Woodshed. It is a chat group. There are players there who are very interested in figuring out the original tunings off the old 78rpm records. I think they would be able to help you. Although, researching this information has merit, my approach is to understand the fingerboard of an open tuned guitar by applying musical theory to figure out songs. Enjoy.

Thanks for the response. Good stuff to know. I’ve just ordered your instructional CD off ebay; can’t wait to start the lessons.
One other issue I was hoping you could shed some light on: What type of tuning does BWJ use in his non-slide songs (I’m Gonna Run to the City of Refuge, Soul of a Man, Jesus Coming Soon, Praise God I’m Satisfied, etc)? How would I go about learning to play in that old spiritual/gospel guitar style?

Thank you. I believe it is commonly thought that Blind Willie played an Oscar Schmidt First Hawaiian Parlor guitar. This guitars come up on up on ebay and Neil Harp at .stellaguitars. sometimes has one for sale. Many of his songs where in Vestapol tuning aka Open D. In general, set up for silde is no different than standard. You should be able to fret note across the entire finger board. Tuning and string gauge relationship provides proper string tension for the slide. Enjoy.

Ken –
Thanks so much for your videos. I’m a drummer trying to learn bottleneck slide guitar and your videos are invaluable.
Do you have any comments on Blind Willie Johnson’s setup/style? That Stella in this video looks a lot like the guitar BWJ is playing in the only known picture of him… I would love to recreate his sound (though I understand this will take a lifetime of practice!)

Thank you for your comment. Yes, in general a heavy glass slide will deliver the best tone. Medicine bottles work nicely too, but sometimes because they don’t have the same mass as a bottleneck they seem to float on the strings and produce a lesser tone. Metal is nice because they don’t break like glass. Enjoy.

I have 3 slides, a brass, and 2 glass ones. I like the glass a lot more, becaused it just seems to be less bright and it gives me the tone I want, you know the old Robert Johnson tone. I even made a slide out of an old medicine bottle to replicate the classic Delta players

Hey! Great intro… im off to watch the others. I’m new to slide guitar but this is opening a whole new avenue in my playing.

Thank you for the clear technical explanation. Yes, there is very little difference between a slide set up and a standard fingering set up. Many players think the action needs to be much higher. Enjoy.
August 7, 2009
when guitarists …
when guitarists adjust action, the action is measured in 64ths of an inch
regular electric guitar would be 5-6 64ths of an inch, but slide is generally at 7 64ths
its mostly based on preference though

Ok thanks kenni. No I’m still able to finger the notes since the action is a bit high when I’m playing slide.
August 7, 2009
The string height …
The string height for slide is really no higher than standard guitar. You should be able to finger notes across the entire fingerboard. Matching string gauge with tuning provides the proper string tension for the slide. Lower tunings, use heavier strings. If you own an older guitar with higher action, you can play slide, but you will be limited to playing with the slide only and not be able to finger notes. Thank you for your question. Enjoy.

Is high action of …
Is high action of the strings suppose to be better for slide than low action? I’m just wondering cause I got two of my guitars an acoustic and an electric guitar raised up there strings for high action to play slide.

Thank you for your question. How about a bottle? There are videos on youtube on How to make a slide. A socket? A piece of metal pipe that you can cut with a hack saw? A small glass medicine bottle? Crude but functional, spoon or closed pocket knife? Basically acoustic and electric slides are the same. Enjoy.

What can you use just from around the house that could work as a good acoustic slide? Same question but for electric too. Thanks

Thank you for your interest. I’m glad my video was helpful. Yes, string gauge is very important. The relationship of string gauge and tuning is essential to producing a good tone. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. Enjoy.

I’m trying to learn the slide and this video has given me a lot of insight to the types of slides to you use.
I’m currently using an old glass medicine bottle on my acoustic in drop D tuning.
I have lots to learn, especially with the string guages.
thank you,
Bill
